Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Urban Renewal Scheme.

Joe Jacob

Question:

128 Mr. Jacob asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to designate further towns for inclusion in the urban renewal scheme; and whether he will, in any case, immediately designate the town of Arklow, County Wicklow. [8810/96]

The present urban renewal scheme commenced in August 1994 and will operate for a three year period in 35 centres throughout the country. A comprehensive review of the impact, effectiveness and cost of the urban renewal schemes which have operated to date is currently under way to assist in the formulation of future policy in this area. It would be inappropriate to consider what new areas, if any, might be suitable for designation until general policy in relation to the next phase of urban renewal is determined in the light of the review. Arklow is, however, included in the pilot tax relief scheme for certain resort areas which commenced in July 1995.
