Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Westport (Mayo) Gaelscoil Application.

Michael Ring

Question:

144 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education whether Gaelscoil na Cruaiche, Westport, County Mayo, has been sanctioned by her Department; and if the final date has passed for the submission of applications for an Irish school. [8656/96]

In 1995, an application for the establishment of Gaelscoil na Cruaiche, Westport, County Mayo, was submitted for consideration to my Department. It was one of two applications received to establish gaelscoileanna in the Westport centre. As the promoters of both gaelscoileanna were unable to satisfy some of the main conditions necessary for the granting of recognition, especially those relating to enrolment numbers and accommodation, neither application was successful.

A revised application for recognition in respect of Gaelscoil na Cruaiche has recently been received. The application is currently under consideration in the planning section of my Department and an inspector's report has been requested.
My Department requested Gaelscoileanna, the umbrella body for the establishment of all Irish schools, to ensure that applications for new gaelscoileanna be received in the planning section of my Department as early as possible but no later than the Easter preceding the school-year in which proposed new schools wish to commence operation. This is in order to facilitate a full examination and a sufficiently early decision by my Department to enable approved schools to open as intended.
