Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Driftnet By-Laws.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

236 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for the Marine whether he intends introducing driftnet by-laws for the Galway, Connemara and Ballinakill areas in the Western Fishery Board region in view of ongoing proceedings (details supplied) in the High Court; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8490/96]

A legal challenge contesting by-laws Nos. 704 and 708 of 1995 is at present ongoing in the High Court. The case has been adjourned to 8 May 1996 at which time it is understood the judge will allow a re-examination of the evidence given in the case to date. The Deputy will appreciate that I cannot comment further on the question of introducing by-laws for the Galway, Connemara and Ballinakill areas as the ongoing legal action precludes further comment at this time.
