Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Discussion with CPSU.

Charlie McCreevy

Question:

40 Mr. McCreevy asked the Minister for Finance the nature, extent and outcome of his discussions with the Civil and Public Service Union. [8475/96]

I met the Civil and Public Service Union on 16 April 1996. As a result of that meeting it was agreed that discussions on the pay and restructuring of the clerical grades in the civil service under the Programme for Competitiveness and Work Pay Agreement would resume with the assistance of a Facilitator from the Labour Relations Commission. A time limit of four weeks was set for the discussions.

The union agreed to suspend the industrial action in the Examinations Branch of the Department of Education in Athlone in order to facilitate this year's examinations and to co-operate with the new beef intervention scheme. The union also agreed to discuss problems arising in the Department of Social Welfare as well as problems in other areas.

The first meeting with the Facilitator took place on Monday 22 April and a series of meetings over the four week period has been arranged. As the discussions are ongoing it would not be appropriate or helpful for me to make any further comment.
