Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Family Affairs Unit.

Joe Walsh

Question:

43 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Finance his views on the recommendation of the Joint Committee on the Family that a family affairs unit, which would include representatives from the Department of Social Welfare, be established in his Department with a co-ordinated policy and expenditure programme and a remit to devise new approaches as required. [7193/96]

I agree that there should, where appropriate, be effective co-ordination of policy and expenditure programmes affecting the family but I am not convinced that the establishment of a new unit is the best way to achieve this or that the Department of Finance should have the leading role in this area. The question of improved approaches to tackling issues of a cross-cutting or transdepartmental nature are being addressed in the context of the proposals for public service renewal which the Government will announced later this week.
