Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Resort Renewal Scheme.

Hugh Byrne

Question:

59 Mr. H. Byrne asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to include Rosslare and its hinterland in the resort renewal scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8688/96]

The new renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July last for a three year period. The purpose of the scheme is to renew and update the tourist amenities and facilities in a certain limited number of seaside resorts.

I stress that this new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of an experimental nature. It must, therefore, be applied on a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy.

The selection of the 15 towns was made in order to give an even spread around the coast of designated resort areas. As the Deputy will appreciate, it is not possible to designate every area of the coast for the purposes of this pilot scheme.
Until this pilot scheme is firmly established it would be inappropriate to consider the designation of any further towns. Consequently, I have no plans to extend the scheme.
