Vol. 464 No. 6

Written Answers. - Pharmaceutical Industry Revenue.

Ivor Callely

Question:

68 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Finance the total revenue generated by the pharmaceutical industry to the Exchequer in 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8669/96]

I refer the Deputy to the reply which I gave to his question on 12 March 1996 (Question No. 82). The position as given in that reply, a copy of which follows, has not changed in the interim.

The following is the reply of Tuesday, 12 March 1996:

Minister for Finance (Mr. Quinn): The relevant available information relates to companies classified in the Revenue Commissioners' records as being involved in the manufacture of pharmaceutical products.

The corporation tax liability of such companies who had accounting periods ending between 1 April 1993 and 31 March 1994 (the latest period for which the relevant data are available) was some £114 million. The PAYE liability of such companies in respect of the year ending 5 April 1993 (the latest period for which the relevant data are available) was in the order of £30 million.

To determine the information requested by the Deputy in respect of the liability of such companies to taxes other than corporation tax and PAYE would involve an extended investigation of the Revenue Commissioners' records which could only be carried out at a disproportionate cost.
