Vol. 464 No. 8

Written Answers. - Monitoring of Rape Data.

Desmond J. O'Malley

Question:

7 Mr. O'Malley asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform whether his Department has requested the Department of Justice to provide seminars for judges to keep them informed of current developments on the subject of rape. [8867/96]

Mary Harney

Question:

9 Miss Harney asked the Minister for Equality and Law Reform the further discussions, if any, his Department has had with the Department of Justice with regard to implementing the recommendation of the Second Commission on the Status of Women that a monitoring mechanism be set up in the Central Criminal Court to gather statistics regarding sentencing for rape. [8863/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 7 and 9 together.

The matters referred to by the Deputies have been discussed with the Department of Justice in the context of the monitoring committee on the implementation of the recommendations of the Second Commission on the Status of Women which is chaired by the Secretary of my Department. The outcome of those discussions is reflected in the recently published second progress report of the monitoring committee. If the Deputies require further information they should put down questions to the Minister for Justice.
