Vol. 464 No. 8

Written Answers. - Hepatitis C Tribunal.

Tony Gregory

Question:

26 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health his response to a request (details supplied) from the hepatitis C/anti-D action group for a fair tribunal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8999/96]

, Limerick East): I gave a detailed response to the issues raised by the Deputy in my reply to a series of priority questions in the Dáil yesterday. I would like to emphasise that I am satisfied that the Compensation Tribunal established by the Government is operating smoothly, fairly and efficiently.

As of today, I understand that the Compensation Tribunal has received 348 applications and since its commencement has heard 46 cases. The awards made to date by the tribunal range from £20,000 to £324,321 and no tribunal award has been rejected. I understand that a total sum of approximately £4.8 million has been awarded to date by the Compensation Tribunal. The closing date for applications is 17 June 1996. The tribunal at this stage has hearing dates arranged until 18 June 1996.
