Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Vehicular Spray Dampers.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

120 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to examine the possibility of insisting that all heavy vehicles and articulated trucks use spray dampers on their vehicles in order to minimise the spray from their vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9250/96]

The Road Traffic (Construction, Equipment and Use of Vehicles) Regulations require that, subject to certain exemptions, every vehicle and every trailer attached to a vehicle be equipped with wings or other similar devices to catch, so far as practicable, mud or water thrown up by the rotation of the wheels or, in the case of a trailer, of the rear wheels, unless adequate protection is afforded by the body of the vehicle. I have no proposals at present to amend these regulations; their enforcement is a matter for the Garda.
