Question:

144 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Education if she intends to have the work at a school (details supplied) in County Meath completed by 1 September 1998. [9148/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 143 and 144 together.

Officials of my Department's building unit are involved in ongoing negotiations regarding a potential site for the proposed new school. It is not possible to say at this stage if and when agreement will be reached in respect of a valuation for the site.

When the most suitable site has been acquired for the proposed new school, the question of appointing a design team to undertake the architectural planning of the project will be considered. At this early stage, it is not possible to say when architectural planning will be completed or when construction will commence. Therefore, the Deputy will appreciate that I am not in a position to indicate when work on the school will be completed.

However, the Deputy can be assured that once agreement has been reached on a suitable site, there will be no delay in proceeding with the planning of the project.
