Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Job Sharing Applications.

Noel Ahern

Question:

43 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if he will request the Department of Justice to re-examine its approach to applications in respect of job-sharing in view of the reply to Parliamentary Question No. 105 of 23 April 1996 wherein it was stated that eight applications were currently being delayed in the Department of Justice due to the embargo on recruitment to the Civil Service, particularly in view of the fact that no other such applications were being delayed in any other Government Department. Question:

48 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance if he will request the Department of Justice to adopt a more sympathetic and enlightened approach to job-sharing applications in view of his reply to Parliamentary Question No. 43 of 23 April 1996 which showed that eight applications were delayed in the Department of Justice and no applications were delayed in any other Government Department. [9055/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 43 and 48 together.

The matter is under discussion between officials from my Department and those of the Department of Justice. Arrangements are being put in place as an alternative to the current 1:3 restriction on the filling of vacancies in the Civil Service and these should help to ensure a more flexible environment in which to facilitate requests for job-sharing.
