Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Hydrotherapy Facilities.

Mary Flaherty

Question:

77 Miss Flaherty asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has for the further provision of additional hydro-pools and attendant staff in view of the enormous benefit of hydrotherapy in the treatment of rheumatism and arthritis. [9229/96]

Limerick East): Hydrotherapy services are provided at a number of hospitals around the country.

Arthritis and rheumatism sufferers avail of a wide range of therapy services, including, hydrotherapy where appropriate. The Arthritis Foundation, in conjunction with the relevant health board, has assisted in the provision of hydrotherapy pools at a number of locations with the foundation fundraising the capital cost and the health board meeting the ongoing revenue costs.

A joint hospital-Department of Health project team has been established to prepare a planning brief covering various proposed developments at Cappagh Hospital including refurbishment of the hydrotherapy pool.

I will keep the need for additional services under review. Any new developments will be considered in the light of available resources and competing demands.
