Vol. 465 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Accidents.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

109 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the action or measures, if any, he intends taking regarding the increase in road injuries and fatalities in the three months ending 31 March 1996; and the comparative figures in respect of this period in 1995. [9096/96]

Provisional figures indicate that 92 people were killed and 2,405 injured in road accidents in the first three months of 1996, compared to 81 people killed and 2,210 injured in the same period in 1995.

I have been conducting a full assessment of road safety policy in recent months, including an appraisal of the scope for more involvement by bodies at local level and for greater focus on the higher-risk categories of road users. I intend to announce the results later this month.
