Comprehensive and updated waste statistics are currently being compiled by the Environmental Protection Agency. When completed these will provide detailed information on progress in implementing the national recycling strategy.
Preliminary indications are that the overall recycling rate for packaging waste has increased from 10.3 per cent in 1993 to some 17 per cent at present. This represents satisfactory progress in relation to the target of 27 per cent recycling for this waste stream over a five-year period which has recently been agreed with IBEC in the context of the REPAK initiatives.
As regards recycling rates for individual materials, these stood in 1993 at 19 per cent for paper, 21 per cent for glass, 24 per cent for metals and a negligible rate for plastics.
