Vol. 465 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Branch Surveillance.

Declan Bree

Question:

192 Mr. Bree asked the Minister for Justice the reason members of the Garda Special Branch recorded the names of those Labour Party members who participated in the 1916 Easter Commemoration Ceremony organised by the Labour Party in Sligo on Easter Sunday 7 April 1996; the purpose of this Special Branch surveillance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [9713/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the presence of members of the Garda Síochána at the ceremony to which the question relates was, in accordance with established practice for all such ceremonies, for the purpose of ensuring that there was no unlawful interference with the ceremony and to preserve the peace. The Garda authorities also inform me that the gardaí on duty at the ceremony did not record the names of persons in attendance.
