Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Rent Supplements.

Seán Doherty

Question:

11 Mr. Doherty asked the Minister for Social Welfare the maximum levels of rent supplement payable by the health boards in each of the health board areas; and the method by which the health boards calculate the maximum levels of rent supplement which apply in their areas. [10368/96]

Maximum rent levels are determined by the health boards in light of local knowledge and taking into account such factors as current accommodation costs in the area. Accommodation costs are based on information on average rents charged in the area received from local auctioneers and letting agents. The maximum rent levels on which rent supplements are based are reviewed on a regular basis to take account of fluctuations in accommodation costs.

Since 1 January 1996, health boards are currently setting maximum rent levels for various classes of people in line with the requirements of regulations which the Minister made last year namely Statutory Instrument No. 382 of 1995. The information available at this time in respect of such rent levels, for the various classes of persons, are shown in the following tabular statement which I will make available to the Deputy.
