Question:24 Mr. Lawlor asked the Minister for Social Welfare the cost to the Exchequer of social welfare general rate increases of 1 per cent, 2 per cent and 3 per cent, based on rates payable in 1996. [10379/96]
Written Answers. - Social Welfare Rate Increases.
The total cost of general increases in weekly social welfare payment rates is estimated as follows: cost in a full year of general 1 per cent increase, £36 million; cost in a full year of general 2 per cent increase, £74 million and cost in a full year of general 3 per cent increase, £110 million.
The above costs are based on rates announced in the 1996 budget which come into effect in June 1996.
