Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Drug Rehabilitation Programme.

Tony Gregory

Question:

52 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Health the financial assistance, if any, available to the parents of a person (details supplied) in Dublin 1, both of whom are in receipt of social welfare payments, towards the cost of a £2,500 drug rehabilitation programme for their son and/or the cost of travel in respect of the parents who participate in this programme in Wexford on one day per week for four weeks. [10515/96]

Limerick East): The provision of treatment services for drug misusers is a matter for the health boards in the first instance.

I have made inquiries of the Eastern Health Board and I understand that the board has not been approached by the person concerned for assistance towards the cost of treatment. If, however, the person is in financial difficulty as a result of the cost of the treatment then I would suggest that he should approach the Eastern Health Board for assistance.

The question of financial assistance for travel costs to persons in receipt of social welfare is a matter for the Department of Social Welfare, which, I understand, is responding to this particular question.
