Vol. 465 No. 7

Written Answers. - Sligo School Extension.

Edward Nealon

Question:

77 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the fact that recent communications from her Department to the board of management of Our Lady of Mercy primary school, Pearse Road, Sligo, have led to concerns regarding works commencing on a proposed extension and other essential facilities on 30 June 1996; if her attention has further been drawn to the need not to postpone the works as the building, which links two school buildings, was agreed at the time of the amalgamation of the three Mercy primary schools which have a current enrolment of 650 children; if she will give an assurance that the building will proceed in view of the difficulty and inconvenience being experienced as well as a serious risk to the health and safety of staff and children due to constant movement from building to building, often in inclement weather; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10502/96]

My Department has agreed to grant-aid the provision of a link-block extension at the school referred to by the Deputy. My Department's architectural staff have prepared sketch scheme drawings for the scheme and planning permission has recently been obtained.

My Department's architectural staff are preparing the documentation necessary to enable the school to apply for a fire certificate. On receipt of the fire certificate, the architect will commence the preparation of working drawings and tender-control documents.

When all planning work has been completed, a decision on the tender and contract process will be taken in the light of other priority projects and available financial resources.
