Vol. 466 No. 1

Written Answers. - Soldiers' Meal Allowance.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

241 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Defence the plans, if any, he has to reinstate the meal allowance paid to soldiers who are required to be on duty away from the barracks for long hours in order that fair treatment can be seen to operate for ordinary soldiers as well as officers. [11037/96]

A meal allowance is not payable to personnel of the Permanent Defence Force. Defence Force regulations provide, however, for the payment of subsistence allowance to officers and men of the Permanent Defence forces in respect of those occasions where they perform duties away from their stations and are not provided with meals. This does not arise frequently, however, as there is a comprehensive catering system in place in the Defence Forces, in which there has been heavy investment, to cope with feeding troops in the field.
