Question:

112 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice the total cost of all travel undertaken by civil servants in her Department in 1995; her policy in relation to such travel; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11149/96]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 111 and 112 together.

As Deputies will be aware, my Department is responsible for six Votes: (1) Office of the Minister for Justice, (2) the Garda Síochána, (3) Prisons, (4) Courts, (5) Land Registry of Deeds and (6) Charitable Donations and Bequests. The approximate total cost of travel, foreign and home travel for civil servants, including prison officers, court clerks etc., in the areas in question was as follows: (1) Office of the Minister for Justice, Department of Justice, £461,660; (3) Prisons, £854,055; (4) Courts, £397,068; (5) Land Registry and Registry of Deeds £13,198 and (6) Charitable Donations and Bequests £48.
In relation to the cost of foreign travel, it was not possible, in the time available, to provide a breakdown of the cost between civil servants and non-civil servants under the Votes for which I have responsibility. However, I am able to provide an approximate breakdown of the total foreign travel costs as follows: (1) Office of the Minister for Justice, Department of Justice, £244,097; (3) Prisons, £9,191; (4) Courts, £19,391; (5) Land Registry and Registry of Deeds, £2,475 and (6) Charitable Donations and Bequests, nil.
It is the practice in my Department, when making travel arrangements for officials, to have regard to the requirements of the individual travelling — meeting time, duration etc. — and, on this basis, to book the most economical flight, having obtained quotations from a number of sources. Business class travel is used where appropriate.
