Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - Irish Beef-Cattle Export Markets.

Donal Moynihan

Question:

132 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the number of new markets acquired for the export of Irish beef and cattle since the introduction of the ban on British beef following the BSE scare. [11183/96]

The Irish beef industry exports beef to approximately 90 countries throughout the world. However, in the immediate aftermath of the BSE crisis a number of important third country markets were closed to Irish beef and cattle. Following intensive efforts by the Government, most of these are now open again. I am continuing with my efforts to seek the reopening of the few remaining markets still closed. However, I am not aware of any new markets acquired since the scare.
