Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - Tawin Island (Galway).

Robert Molloy

Question:

43 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for the Marine whether he has received an application from Galway County Council for a coastal erosion grant in respect of works required at Tawin Island, Oranmore, County Galway to protect the causeway and public roadway; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9188/96]

Galway County Council has included Tawin Island among its top four priorities for protection. These were submitted to my Department for consideration for aid under the Operational Programme for Environmental Services 1994-99. My Department was concerned about certain aspects of the Tawin Island proposals and requested the county council to reconsider its application in the light of these concerns. As a result the council has submitted revised proposals which are acceptable to the Department.

As it will not now be possible to proceed with a major project in 1996, a revised coast protection programme for 1996 is now being prepared. I have, accordingly, asked my officials to examine the priority proposals as submitted by the coastal local authorities with a view to identifying alternative works for completion this year. Tawin Island is being considered in this regard.
