Vol. 466 No. 2

Written Answers. - Personal Assistants for Disabled People.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

77 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to demands for an independent living fund which will allow people with certain disabilities to have as a right access to personal assistants; the documentation and proposals, if any, he has received from the Centre for Independent Living which is seeking the establishment of this fund as a matter of urgency; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11226/96]

Limerick East): I am aware of the Centre for Independent Living's proposal for the establishment of an independent living fund to finance the provision of a personal assistance service for people with physical disabilities. Officials from my Department recently met with representatives of the Centre for Independent Living to discuss this proposal as well as other service needs of people with disabilities.

As I have previously stated in this House, the future provision of personal assistants has been examined in the context of an overall review of services for people with physical disabilities by the review group on services for people with physical and sensory disabilities whose final report is expected within the next few weeks.
