Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Safety at Sports Grounds.

Michael Creed

Question:

201 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education the person-body that has responsibility for spectator and participant safety at sporting events; and the person-body that has specific responsibility for an event (details supplied) in County Kildare. [11693/96]

Safety is the responsibility of those who organise the event and those who administer or own the ground or venue in which the event is held. The local authority, the Garda and the health board play a key role in assisting ground management to meet this responsibility and may, in certain circumstances, have to insist on measures being taken in order to achieve reasonable standards of safety.

The Deputy will be aware that my Department has published a voluntary code of practice for safety at sports grounds which provides standards and guidance for ground management and event promoters on all aspects of spectator safety at sports grounds. My Department has no information on the particular event referred to by the Deputy.
