Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Confiscation of Banner.

Tony Gregory

Question:

236 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice whether the banner of the Cuba Support Group (Ireland) was confiscated by the Garda during the recent visit of President Clinton to Ireland; and when the banner will be returned to the group concerned. [11704/96]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, following a complaint from a member of the public that her child was being struck by the flagpole holding the banner referred to in the question, gardai went to investigate.

Two people were found to be waving the banner from side to side and in the process striking other onlookers. To properly investigate the complaint of assault and in an effort to stop further onlookers being struck the banner was confiscated.

The banner is currently in the possession of the Garda and arrangements are being made for its return to its owner.
