Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Border Regional Authority.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

45 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance his views on the recently published report prepared by the Border Regional Authority, particularly its proposal for the creation of a Border regional economic zone in order to assist southern Border counties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10771/96]

Under the 1991 Act setting up the regional authorities the Minister for the Environment charged the regional authorities with the production of regional plans setting out their proposals to promote co-ordination in the provision of public services at regional level.

The Border Regional Authority was one of the first to complete its report. The report contains a wide range of proposals which have implications for resource allocation within the region and between regions. The proposals span the competences of a number of departments and will merit careful consideration at inter-departmental level.
