Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Seaside Resorts Scheme.

Robert Molloy

Question:

54 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Finance the number of applications for approval in respect of each designated area under the seaside resort renewal scheme; the estimated financial investment in each case; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [10262/96]

The pilot scheme of relief for traditional seaside resorts came into effect last July for a three year period and is in operation in fifteen seaside towns around the country.

At present officials from my Department and the Department of Tourism and Trade are monitoring the progress of the scheme. I understand that the Department of Tourism and Trade has written to the regional tourism organisations and Shannon Development requesting a report on developments under the scheme and its impact on the designated areas. However, given the tax-based nature of the scheme and the normal lead-in time for capital projects, it is difficult to assess the level of activity which is currently under way.
