Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Seaside Resorts Scheme.

Cecilia Keaveney

Question:

74 Cecilia Keaveney asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to include additional towns in the pilot tax relief scheme for certain resort areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11733/96]

The new renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July last for a three-year period. The purpose of the scheme is to renew and update the tourist amenities and facilities in a certain limited number of seaside resorts.

I would stress that this new initiative is a pilot scheme and is of an experimental nature. It must therefore be applied on a limited basis in order to evaluate its efficacy.

The selection of the 15 towns was made in order to give an even spread around the coast of designated resort areas. Until this pilot scheme is firmaly established it would be inappropriate to consider the designation of any further towns. Consequently, I have no plans to extend the scheme.
