Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Nursing Registration-Diploma Programme.

Noel Ahern

Question:

99 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Health the reason some teaching hospitals, such as the Mater Hospital, were excluded from the new linkage agreement with the universities for student nurses; the hospitals that were included and excluded in the Dublin area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11371/96]

Limerick East): As I have stated many times I am committed to the extension of the registration-diploma programme to all schools of nursing in as short a timeframe as possible. The pace of that transition is dictated by the amount of funding available annually to finance the additional costs involved in the programme.

This programme was introduced in the Western Health Board in October 1994. By this autumn it will be available in 12 general and two psychiatric schools of nursing. This year's expansion into nine additional schools represents significant progress and is the absolute maximum which could be funded within the allocation available for this purpose.

By the end of 1996 the programme will be available in the following Dublin Schools of Nursing:
General
School of Nursing, Beaumont Hospital
School of Nursing, Meath Hospital
School of Nursing, Adelaide Hospital
School of Nursing, St. James's Hospital
School of Nursing, St. Vincent's Hospital, Dublin 4.
Psychiatric
School of Nursing, St. Vincent's Hospital, Fairview.
While it was not possible to commence the programme in the Mater School of Nursing this year, the objective is to include all remaining schools at the earliest possible date.
