Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Medical Practitioners Act.

Michael P. Kitt

Question:

112 Mr. M. Kitt asked the Minister for Health if he intends to amend the Medical Practitioners Act, 1978 in view of the fact that it relates to the registration of medical practitioners who have already been granted temporary registration; whether full registration will be granted to a doctor (details supplied) in County Galway who has had temporary registration in this country for ten years and has practiced psychiatry during that period; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11542/96]

Limerick East): The registration of medical practitioners in Ireland is the statutory responsibility of the Medical Council. I have been informed by the council that according to its records, although the individual referred to has made inquiries of the council concerning full registration, he has not made any application for full registration. In the absence of the council receiving and considering an application for full registration from the individual referred to, it is not in a position to comment further on this matter.

Work on the amendment of the Medical Practioners Act, 1978 including consideration of its provisions relating to registration is at an advanced stage. I expect that this work will be completed shortly and that I will be in a position to bring forward amending legislation by the end of this year.
