Vol. 466 No. 4

Written Answers. - Special Protection Areas.

Willie O'Dea

Question:

129 Mr. O'Dea asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the plans, if any, to designate the area known as the wetlands, Corbally Road, Limerick as a special protected area. [11485/96]

The National Parks and Wildlife Service have no plans to designate this site as a Special Protection Area under Article 4 of Council Directive on the conservation of wild birds (79/409/EEC), the "Birds Directive". Under this Directive member states are bound to take conservation measures to conserve important habitats of two categories of wild birds i.e., certain listed rare or vulnerable species and regularly occurring migratory species. Particular attention must also be paid to wetlands of international importance. This site is not considered to be of international importance.
