Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Film Projects.

Eamon Walsh

Question:

97 Mr. E. Walsh asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the number of films currently being made in Ireland; the location of each film; the number of films awaiting production and their possible locations. [11808/96]

Decisions as to the locations to be used and the optimum time to commence film production rest with the independent producers and are subject to change depending on many variable factors. My Department does not therefore have reliable information on the number of productions in progress at any given time, their location, or the number of film projects which could yet emerge as part of a particular year's level of production.

However, to assist the Deputy I have made informal inquiries and my best information is that some six productions, including independent television productions and animation series, are currently being made in Ireland. Some four other films have already completed principal photography this year. At this point, which is still early, there are some further fourteen films and two television productions scheduled to film in Ireland in the summer and autumn. Previous trends would suggest that further projects will emerge as the year progresses.

It is difficult to give concrete information regarding locations. However my inquiries indicate that Counties Cavan, Clare, Derry, Donegal, Dublin, Galway, Monaghan and Wicklow have been used or will be used as locations for film productions this year. It is likely that other locations will emerge as the year progresses. It is not possible to be more specific at this point.
