Question:

40 Mr. Molloy asked the Minister for Health the current position regarding funding for palliative care services in the Western Health Board area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11771/96]

(Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 23 and 40 together.

Information received from the Western Health Board concerning the funding of palliative care service in that region at present is as follows: Galway: Palliative care is provided by the Galway Hospice Service; Mayo-Roscommon: Three-way funding is provided by the Irish Cancer Society, Mayo/ Roscommon hospice service and the Western Health Board for the provision of four palliative care nurses. The approximate cost for providing each nurse is £27,000.

The medical director and the night sitter service are funded by the Mayo-Roscommon hospice service.

I am grateful to the Deputy for giving me the opportunity to inform the House of the most up-to-date position with regard to the Galway Hospice.

Officers of my Department recently met a delegation from the Galway Hospice Foundation and proposed a basis on which further discussions might take place between the foundation and the Western Health Board to agree a mutually satisfactory arrangement for the provision of services at the hospice. I look forward to hearing the outcome of these discussions.

It is my intention to visit the Galway Hospice premises in the near future.
