Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Proposed IVF Unit.

Ivor Callely

Question:

61 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health the current position regarding the provision of an in-vitro fertilisation service at Cork University Hospital; whether arrangements were in train to provide such a service in December 1995; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11737/96]

Limerick East): As I have previously stated, I do not have any plans for the establishment of the unit referred to by the Deputy. However, I understand that Cork University Hospital, in association with the University Medical School, is formulating plans for the setting up of an IVF unit. Any proposal which may be submitted to my Department in regard to this matter will have to be considered in the context of many competing requests for resources and the regulatory framework within which any such units should desirably operate.
