Vol. 466 No. 5

Written Answers. - Disabled Mothers.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

82 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Health the number of disabled women who have given birth in Dublin maternity hospitals since 1980. [11885/96]

Limerick East): Information on disabled women giving birth is not readily available. The term `disabled' can cover a very wide range of impairments which may or may not be relevant in the context of maternity. Aspects of maternal health which affect the outcome of pregnancies are recorded through the birth notification system but refer principally to specific diseases and medical conditions. These are coded using the World Health Organisation's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-9).
