Vol. 466 No. 7

Written Answers. - Junior Certificate Subjects.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

130 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Education her views on whether the proposal to omit geography and history from the core for certification at the junior certificate represents a retrograde step in the education of our children; the reason for this proposal in view of the rich geographical and historical culture that has been a feature of the Irish education system; the reason she has gone against the recommendation of the NCCA in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12264/96]

The deputy will be aware of the resolution which was passed by Dáil Éireann on 29 May 1996 and which states:

That Dáil Éireann endorses the commitment in the White Paper to promote and develop in pupils a knowledge and appreciation of their social and cultural heritage and environment through the study of History and Geography at Junior Certificate Level and, in particular, welcomes the Ministers commitment to maintain the status of History and Geography as core curriculum subjects in the Junior Cycle.
