Vol. 466 No. 7

Written Answers. - Lismore Castle, Waterford.

Austin Deasy

Question:

36 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will enter into negotiations with the owners of Lismore Castle and the surrounding estate with a view to having the castle classified as a stately home and the surrounding grounds classified as a national park. [12190/96]

I am satisfied that Lismore Castle is afforded adequate legal protection under section 12 of the National Monuments (Amendment) Act, 1994, as it is included in the list of recorded monuments in County Waterford. While Lismore Castle is de facto a stately home, there is no special provision for such a classification under the relevant Acts. As regards the grounds of Lismore Castle, these would not fulfil the required criteria for designation as a National Park.
