Vol. 466 No. 7

Written Answers. - RTÉ Services to Northern Ireland.

Ivor Callely

Question:

86 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht the progress, if any, made to enhance and develop the service provided by RTÉ to Northern Ireland audiences; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12208/96]

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 99 of 8 May 1996, columns 134 and 135 of the Official Report for that day refer. As a result of the technical discussions to which I referred in that reply, a joint technical report on increasing the power northwards from the RTÉ transmitter at Clermont Carn, County Louth, has been agreed between the radio frequency management authorities in the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications and their counterparts in the Radiocommunications Agency in London.

I have recently written to the Secretary of State for National Heritage, the Minister with functional responsibility for broadcasting matters in the UK, seeking political agreement to a phased implementation of the proposed changes to the transmitter at Clermont Carn.
