Vol. 466 No. 7

Written Answers. - Cork House Demolition.

Máirín Quill

Question:

96 Miss Quill asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if his attention has been drawn to the fact that planning permission has been lodged with Cork Corporation for the demolition of the house in which Thomas McCurtain, revered Lord Mayor of Cork, was assassinated in March 1920; the action, if any, that is open to his Department to prevent this demolition; if so, the plans, if any, he has to take that action; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [12346/96]

The National monuments and historic properties service of my Department has ascertained from Cork Corporation that an application for planning permission to demolish No. 40, Thomas Davis Street, where Thomas McCurtain was assasinated, was recently lodged. The building is not listed by the planning authority and it is not known to be of any special architectural interest. My Department will be examining the planning application as part of the normal planning procedures and in that process I will have the importance of the house assessed.
