Vol. 467 No. 5

Written Answers. - Analysis of Drugs Samples.

Brian Lenihan

Question:

94 Mr. Lenihan asked the Minister for Justice the average period within which the Garda Forensic Laboratory can analyse a sample of suspected drugs; and if he will make a statement on whether she has satisfied herself with the current arrangements in relation to the analysis of drugs samples. [13718/96]

In all cases involving major drug seizures a sample of the suspected drugs is analysed immediately by the Forensic Science Laboratory, particularly where a person or persons have been arrested under the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

All other cases are prioritised for analysis on a daily basis having regard to the type and quantity of drugs seized with a view to getting the result of the analysis to the Garda as quickly as possible. The laboratory makes every effort to have the results of all cases with the Garda within the six months of the date of seizure of the sample.
