Vol. 467 No. 5

Written Answers. - Community Employment Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

117 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the evaluation and assessment, if any, made of community employment; the additional measures, if any, he is considering; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [13756/96]

A target of 35 per cent placement into jobs and 25 per cent into further education-training by end of 1997 has been set following recent changes to the CE programme. As CE has only been in operation since April 1994, it is too early yet to evaluate the full impact of the programme. However, FÁS in conjunction with Irish Marketing Surveys conducted research in 1995 which showed that of those that left community employment in August 1995, 54 per cent returned to the live register, 10 per cent were unemployed but not on the live register and 38 per cent were employed. I can assure the Deputy that the programme will be subject to ongoing evaluation and assessment.
