Vol. 467 No. 5

Written Answers. - Additional Milk Quota.

James Leonard

Question:

121 Mr. Leonard asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the progress, if any, that has been made in securing additional milk quota from small suppliers as recommended in submissions by the cross-Border milk quota action group. [13689/96]

There have been a number of proposals put forward in regard to securing additional quota for the Border areas, including the one mentioned in the question. I have already indicated full support for any initiatives which would secure additional quota for that region.

However, the Deputy will be aware that the granting of additional milk quota is a sensitive matter within the EU. If there is to be any hope of success a proposal would require an initiative by the EU Commission and the full support of the UK authorities.
