Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Winter Fatteners Compensation.

John Ellis

Question:

167 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the way in which he proposes to compensate winter fatteners under the BSE compensation scheme who sold cattle for live shipment after the 20 March 1996. [14747/96]

As indicated in my reply to Question No. 361 on 2 July, I intend to use the BSE compensation funds to top-up the deseasonalisation premium in respect to steers slaughtered between 20 March and 8 June to provide assistance to other categories of procedures most severely hit by the crisis. With regard to the latter category, my Department will take a decision on this matter over the next few weeks following discussions with the farming organisations.
