Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Drug Treatment Service.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

72 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Health his views on whether a separate drug treatment programme should be developed for adolescents and young persons; and the progress, if any, that has been made in this regard. [14779/96]

Limerick East): The provision of drug treatment services is a matter for the health boards in the first instance.

As part of the Eastern Health Board's Service Plan for 1996 a targeted programme aimed at young drug users, including heroin smokers, is being put in place in the board's treatment locations. The Eastern Health Board also funds a number of community based initiatives where early intervention and detoxification specifically targeted at young people takes place.

Of course, all of the various drug treatment programmes give particular attention to adolescents and young persons.
