Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Employment Contracts.

James McDaid

Question:

85 Dr. McDaid asked the Minister for Health the length of duration of employment contracts issued to all grades; the amount of notice given to all grades as to whether such contracts will be renewed or otherwise; and if he will standardise such procedures. [14908/96]

Limerick East): Because of the nature of the service provided, it is essential that there be flexibility within the health service in relation to the types of employment contracts offered to employees.

The various types of employment contracts issued are permanent contracts, temporary contracts, and special purpose or fixed term contracts. Each contract type could potentially be used in relation to any grade of staff, depending on the particular circumstances.

It is a matter for the individual employer to decide the length of contracts issued, dependent on the nature and duration of the vacancy being filled. The amount of notice given to employees about the renewal or otherwise of contracts varies depending on the duration of the contract and the demands of the service, within the terms of the relevant legislation.
