Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Action Against Litter.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

97 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for the Environment the progress, if any, made to date on the new initiative entitled Action Against Litter; the plans, if any, he has to create greater public awareness of this problem; and when legislation will be introduced in this regard. [14787/96]

Implementation of the Action Against Litter initiative is proceeding in accordance with the strategy outlined in my policy statement issued on 12 February 1996. A major public awareness compaign is currently being promoted and will be continued over the coming months until the autumn. Further public awareness measures will be developed in 1997.

The Government has already approved detailed proposals for comprehensive new legislation to deal with litter pollution. Drafting of the Bill is proceeding urgently with a view to early publication.
