Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Wheelchair Vehicle Accessibility.

Ivor Callely

Question:

99 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for the Environment the make and model of vehicles that meet his Department's regulations for wheelchair accessibility; the concerns, if any, that have been raised by wheelchair users of public service licensed vehicles; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14789/96]

The Road Traffic (Public Service Vehicles) (Amendment) Regulations, 1995, specify standards for wheelchair accessible taxis, including the dimensions of wheelchairs which such vehicles should be capable of accommodating and the facilities, such as ramps and anchorages, to be provided in the vehicles. These standards were first determined in 1992 following consultations with various interests, including those representing wheelchair users. Particular types of vehicles are not specified in the regulations as being suitable for use as a wheelchair accessible taxi; it is a matter for the Garda Commissioner to certify whether a particular vehicle is suitable to be licensed as such.

Representations have been received in relation to the standards for wheelchair accessible taxis and the general question is at present being examined by my Department.
