Vol. 468 No. 2

Written Answers. - Dublin Primary School Places.

Frances Fitzgerald

Question:

114 Ms F. Fitzgerald asked the Minister for Education her views on the requirement for primary school places in Ranelagh, Rathmines and Donnybrook; and her views on whether the current number of places are adequate for the numbers requiring places in the 1996/1997 academic year. [14783/96]

A review of the availability of pupil places for children in the Ranelagh, Rathmines and Donnybrook areas, carried out by my Department in 1993-94, concluded that sufficient school accommodation exists to cater for children from those areas.

Problems had arisen mainly from the wish of parents from outside the areas referred to by the Deputy to enrol their children in schools in these areas and this had resulted in some local children having a difficulty in obtaining places. However, I am not aware of any significant difficulties in the placement of children in the 1996-97 school year.

I have asked my Department to ensure that the position for September 1997 is reviewed early in the next school year.
